Although the Portucel Soporcel Group has been formed from two companies with different
histories
, their strategy has always been characterized by a common aim: consolidating a position as leader in the European pulp and paper market.
The final acquisition of Soporcel by Portucel in 2001 marked an important step in the restructuring of the paper industry in Portugal in its aim to create a national group that would have a strong presence in the pulp and paper sector. The Portucel Soporcel Groups development strategy in 2001, when the Group started operations, was expressed by a significant number of relevant facts.
By the beginning of 2000, an important stage had already been reached in the plan drawn up for the Portuguese pulp and paper sector: the purchase of Papéis Inapa, by the company then called Portucel Industrial, thus enabling significant economies of scale to be achieved through greater integration in paper production.
