The Portucel Soporcel Group is one of the largest Portuguese forestry owners. It manages 1,5% of the Portugal's land, 3,4% of the country's forests and 14,6% of the eucalyptus forest. Because of its characteristics, the
Eucalyptus globulus
is the preferred species for pulp and paper production.
The Group has responsibility for about 130 thousand hectares of property, of which the eucalyptus plantations occupy 75%, and it is responsible for a diversity of forestry assets spread over 172 local districts from North to South of the country.
As well as producing the timber to supply the Group's industrial needs, the forests are also significantly productive in a number of other ways, including hunting and shooting, bark, cork, honey, and other services. The
Espirra Estate
is a good example of the Groups policy in the field of agro-forestry diversity. The excellent
Herdade de Espirra wine
produced on this estate has already received several national and international awards.
In the field of
forestry research
, the collaboration with
RAIZ
(The Forestry and Paper Research Institute) that supports the forestry and paper-producing sectors with its research, technical support and specialist training, is especially noteworthy.
The Group's forests are managed by Aliança Florestal. Under this company, mechanised forestry exploitation is the responsibility of AFLOMEC, while the prevention and combat of forest fires is undertaken by AFOCELCA, a company created jointly with others in the same sector.
Viveiros Aliança, SA
(Aliança Nurseries Ltd) is the producer of forest and ornamental plants both for the Group and for the foreign market.
The Portucel Soporcel Group is also a founder member of IDEA (The Institute for Development of Eucalyptus Applications), an association that brings together Portuguese, Brasilian and Chilean pulp and paper producers with the aim of improving research into the eucalyptus.
The Group participates in a knowledge and action net within the field of national forestry, which represents a especially relevant factor in the countrys development. In fact, Portugal is one of EU's countries, in which the forestry sector plays the largest part in the GDNP.
The Portucel Soporcel Group follows the principles of
Sustainable Forestry Management
and keeps abreast of the developments in the field of
forestry certification
. It has played a leading role in IBISUS (the Iberian Initiative on the Principles of Sustainable Forestry Development) and in the PEFC (the Pan-European Forestry Certification Scheme).
