For the Portucel Soporcel Group, Quality is inseparable from the Environment. These strategic parameters have been adopted at every level within the Group structure and are fundamental to asserting its presence in the demanding international markets.
The whole of the Portucel Soporcel Group’s business is based on a sustainable development cycle. Its products originally come from forests that are managed with the strictest respect for the environment and are manufactured using natural, renewable energies. The environmental performance of its mills attains thresholds that exceed the applicable Portuguese and Community legislation and place the Group in a leading position where sustainability is concerned.
The Portucel Soporcel Group sees increasing eco-efficiency while reconciling industrial activities, the environment and society as a permanent goal, which is why it has been making improvement after improvement in the conservation of resources and the reduction of emissions.
The goals achieved are the result of the Group’s engagement in environmental protection over the last years. Both the companies that formed the Group had been leaders in the history of certification and in the implementation of Quality Management Systems in Portugal. While Portucel was the pioneer - having been the first company to achieve certification in 1988, Soporcel achieved success by going for quality right from the start, in both the Portuguese and the external markets
All the Group's mills are certified according to Standard ISO 9002 and their laboratories are accredited. The mills have environmental management systems that have already been accredited under Standard ISO 14001.
For the Portucel Soporcel Group, Quality and the Environment are factors intrinsically linked, which run through the whole organisation from the forest to the relationship of the mill with its neighbours, and including all the production processes.
The Policy on Management Systems is an instrument that the Portucel Soporcel Group has defined with the aim of achieving excellence in the production and marketing of high quality pulp and paper within the principles of sustainable development.
