The International Year of Planet Earth (running from 2007 to 2009), declared by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2005, is a joint initiative between UNESCO and IUGS (International Union of Geological Sciences), designed to bring Earth sciences to a wider public and to enable Geoscientists to contribute further to public policies and business strategy.
The international programme included the Planet Earth Lisbon Event 2009, which took place on 20 and 21 November, sponsored by the Portucel Soporcel Group.
