The movement has worked to raise public awareness of how individual behaviour can help reduce the number of fires.

Movimento ECO's primary mission is to mobilize communities in the defence of the country's woodlands, persuading people to think twice before causing fire risks, by lighting bonfires or setting off fireworks.

In proportion to its size, Portugal is the most densely forested country in Europe. This means that its woodlands are of crucial economic and social importance, and that the effect of fires can be devastating on social and economic wellbeing.

The Portucel Soporcel group has an obvious stake in this campaign: with 120 thousand hectares of certified forests under its management, the Group relies on its woodlands as a source of raw materials and as a strategic focus for the future.
